Container Herb Garden![]() Creating A Container Garden For Growing HerbsGrowing a container herb garden is easy and very cost effective! Learn about some great container garden ideas and container garden plans. ![]() Money is not the only thing you will be saving by choosing to grow an herb container garden over a traditional garden. You will also be saving yourself lots of headaches and hard work! This is because an annual container garden will not require as much attention as a traditional garden will. For some people, growing a container herb garden may be the only thing they can grow. They may either have limited yard space or live in an apartment building. If this happens to be you, a herb container garden is the perfect solution. Because herb container gardens are so easy to grow and require little to no maintenance, they are an excellent choice for the elderly or those with limited mobility. Choosing Your Herb Garden ContainerBefore you go out and buy expensive containers for your herb plants, I suggest looking around your house and garage. Having a great imagination is key when looking for the perfect container for your plants. ![]() While simple clay or plastic containers will do, why not step outside the box and find something a little more unique to reflect your personal style and taste. For instance, if you love the country feel, you can use an old tin watering can or even an old wooden barrel. These are actually a couple of my favorite containers. If you're wanting something a little more modern, a good choice might be a vase, ceramic or clay container with decorative designs on them. Your options are limitless when it comes to choosing containers for your herb plants. Just remember, as long as it can hold water, soil, and a plant it can be used. Planting A Container GardenBefore you start planting, you will need to choose your container garden plants and container garden soil. Some great herb plants for your container herb garden include rosemary, basil, mint, and chives. If you are new to herb gardening, I recommend growing a few culinary herbs. Culinary herbs are easy to grow, easy to care for, and you get the added bonus of using fresh herbs in your favorite meals. After you get the hang of it and are a little more comfortable growing herbs, you can branch out and experiment with different herbs for different uses. I think my favorite part of gardening is watching my plants sprout from a tiny seed that I planted several weeks before. However, if you are new to gardening, you might want to think about purchasing herb seedlings rather than seeds. Since you're growing a container herb garden and won't need many plants, the cost will be minimal. ![]() For the soil and fertilizer, any all purpose potting soil will do. I like to use Scotts "Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables", and Miracle-Gro Liquid All Purpose Plant Food. You may see fertilizers and potting soils claiming to be specially formulated for herbs, but an all purpose will do just fine. Now that you have your plants or seeds picked out, you're ready to begin planting your container herb garden. First, fill your container with the soil and the recommended amount of fertilizer. The fertilizer will help enhance the soils fertility. If you are using a liquid fertilizer, just add it to the water before watering your herbs. How much soil you'll need will be determined by whether or not you're using seedlings or seeds. If you're using seeds you'll want to fill the container about 1 inch or so from the top with soil, giving yourself room to cover the seeds. If you decided to go with seedlings, add a little soil to the bottom of the container, place the plant inside and then fill the space around it with more soil. After you are finished, make sure to give the herbs a good watering, especially if you are growing them from seeds. Herbs need lots of moisture to germinate. My list of herbs can provide you with detailed growing information on each of the herbs I listed and more. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine. If you run into problems or have any questions, you can always contact me through my contact form. Remember, growing a container herb garden is much easier than growing a traditional garden. x![]()
