The Best Home Gardening Tools For Your Herb Garden

A good set of hand garden tools are essential no matter what type of gardening you enjoy! For this reason I've listed what I think are the best gardening tools for herb gardening.

Gardening tool sets come in many shapes, styles, and designs, including adaptive gardening tools and ergonomic gardening tools. These are great options if you plan on spending lots of time in your garden, but if you're only going to grow a few herbs, a basic set of garden hand tools should be sufficient.

I'm not recommending a certain brand or style because what works for me may not work for you. One thing to keep in mind though is that hand garden tools are like anything else in that you get what you pay for.

Never substitute quality for price because you will pay more in the long run!

No matter what type of gardening you do, a good quality garden hoe, garden rake, and garden shovel are a must.

You may already have most of these garden tools tucked away in your garage, so you already have a head start. If you have nothing to start with, you should be able to purchase a set of good quality tools for less than $150.00.

You should be able to find everything you need at your local gardening center.

Some things to look for in your new tools:

  • 1. Stainless Steel Metal - this will prevent your tools from rusting.
  • 2. Sturdy Handles - Wooden, fiberglass, and metal handles are all acceptable.
  • 3. Comfort - A comfortable tool makes using it all more easy.
  • 4. Weight - Tools that weigh more are usually better quality and easier to use.

Hand Garden Tools

Garden Trowel

The garden trowel is the tool that I probably use the most in my gardens. This tool can be used for everything from moving small amounts of dirt to digging out weeds. This tool is very versatile, so make sure you choose a good one.

Garden Spade

Another useful tool is the garden spade. This tool comes in several varieties including a long narrow head primarily used for digging, to a wider head used for moving large amounts of dirt.

If you already have a shovel I would opt for the narrow head garden spade.

Garden Cultivator

This tool is great for breaking up small amounts of dirt in preparation for planting your herbs. You can also use this tool for removing small patches of grass and weeds.

Garden Scoop

The garden scoop is great for transferring soil from bags or buckets to your pots or garden. It is also a great tool for digging holes to plant your herbs in.

Garden Shears

You need a good sharp pair of garden shears for pruning and for propagating your herbs. Make sure they are very sharp so you get a nice clean cut.

Garden Knee Pads

If you plan spending a lot of time on your knees in your garden, garden knee pads are a must. These relatively inexpensive tools are money well spent as they can save your knees from a lot of pain.

Again, these hand garden tools are what work for me, but you may find that you don't need all of them. I didn't go out and buy all these tools when I first started. It wasn't until I actually started herb gardening that I realized how much easier these tools made the process.
