The Best Insect Repellents
Are Natural Insect Repellents

Herbal insect repellents not only make an effective insect repellent for dogs and plants, but can also make an excellent insect repellent lotion that your whole family can use.

Plain and simple, an herbal insect repellant can work just as good as other insect repellents!

An herbal insect repellant can help keep flies from your kitchen table, pests from damaging other plants in your garden, and keep fleas off your pets.

Herbal insect repellants are also good in keeping hungry mosquitoes from dinning on your skin.

An all natural insect repellent such as an herbal insect repellent is completely harmless to people, pets, and the environment.

The wonderful scent that we enjoy from our herbs is the very thing that keeps pesky insects away.

Insect Repellent Lotion

If you want to make an insect repellent lotion, the first thing you need to do is make an herbal oil.

You'll want to use rosemary, tansy, and pennyroyal along with a light vegetable oil like soybean oil.

The strong aroma that these herbs give off is what will keep the insects away, so repeat the infusion process three times with fresh herbs to get a good concentrated aroma.

To finish the lotion, simply add a teaspoon of purchased essential oil of citronella.

Label and store the lotion in a cool dark location.

Keeping Moths Away

Moth herbal insect repellants are a great way to step into the world of homemade insect repellents made with herbs.

The best herbs to use for a moth insect repellent are rosemary, santolina, lavender, and southernwood.

You can either make sachets, or can use the herbs just by tucking them in tissue paper and laying them among your clothes and blankets.

Moth Repellent Sachet

The combination of these dried herbs has a pleasant fragrance that moths will find repulsive.

What you'll need:

  • 6 cups of dried santolina leaves
  • 4 cups of dried southernwood leaves
  • 1 cup of dried chamomile leaves
  • 1 cup of dried lavender leaves
  • 1 cup of dried rosemary leaves
  • 1/2 cup of dried bay leaves
  • 1/4 cup of ground cinnamon
  • 6 oz of orrisroot or oakmoss

Instructions:

  • 1. Mix all the ingredients and add 20 drops of oil of lavender.
  • 2. Place in a taped shut container, then shake to mix the ingredients.
  • 3. Store in a dark, warm location for 6 weeks, shaking the container daily.
  • 4. Pour the mixture into squares of cloth or pillow cases.

That's all there is to making a great herbal insect repellent for moths. The hardest part is gathering all the ingredients.

While you can use herbs from a spice rack, for best results I recommend using freshly dried herbs.

Herbal Insect Repellents For Pets

As you know, pets attract all sorts of insects including fleas and ticks. While there are plenty of commercial solutions available in the stores or at your vet, most of them contain poisons.

An herbal insect repellent can do the same job, but without the harmful chemicals.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to help keep your pet free of fleas is to stuff some cushions or their favorite stuffed toy with herbs.

Another great option is to make an herbal insect repellent flea dip for your pet.

Herbal Pet Dip

This refreshing dip will help limit the amount of insects that call your pet home.

1. Make a strong infusion with fresh pennyroyal, rosemary, peppermint, and santolina by pouring boiling water over them. You will need about 2 to 3 cups of each herb.

2. Let the infusion steep for at least 30 minutes in a covered container.

3. Strain the herbs out and add 1 gallon of warm water.

4. Saturate your pets coat by pouring the mixture over them.

Herbal insect repellents can make a great alternative to the commercial products you are accustomed to using.
