Discover How To Grow Herbs Indoors

Growing herbs in an indoor herb garden is very similar to growing your favorite indoor house plants.

 Easy Indoor Herb Garden

Would you be interested in knowing the easiest herb garden plants to grow along with the best indoor garden system?

The hardest part about growing an indoor garden is choosing an indoor herb garden design, and which indoor herbs you want to grow.

Most people who decide to start growing indoor herbs begin with an indoor culinary herb garden.

Most indoor gardens consist of only a few of your favorite herbs, which is why indoor herb container gardening has become very popular.

Growing indoor plants such as herbs is relatively easy, which is why I would recommend to anyone who is interested in gardening, to start with herbs.

Indoor Herb Garden For Growing Herbs Indoors

You have many options when it comes to indoor garden supplies, including the many different indoor herb garden kits.

An indoor herb garden kit can make the whole process of growing your own indoor herb garden that much easier.

One indoor garden kit that I highly recommend is the Aero Garden from AeroGrow. This garden is a little pricey, but well worth it in my opinion. It uses an aeroponics system to grow its herbs and plants. This allows you to grow herbs and other indoor gardening plants all year long.

Because the herbs receive their food from a nutrient rich mist, no messy potting soil is required. This is also a great option for those looking for a truly organic plant.

Another indoor herb garden kit that I've had good success with is the Chia Pet Herb Garden. This garden kit comes with clay pots, potting soil, herb seeds, and growing instructions. For best results, you will need to apply your own liquid fertilizer.

This herb garden kit has mixed reviews online, but if you follow the growing instructions, you will have a successful indoor herb garden.

You don't have to purchase a garden kit to have a successful inside herb garden. They just simplify the process.

When it comes down to it, all you need are a few containers that will hold water, soil, your favorite herb plants, and a sunny window sill or other area in your house.

I have a friend who converted a south facing spare room in his house into an indoor garden room. He filled it with his favorite herbs and vegetables. Of course, they are all in containers.

You can either create or buy the indoor herb garden that's right for you.

The Best Herbs For Your Indoor Herb Garden

Culinary herbs are some of the best and easiest herbs to grow indoors. They include basil, chives, marjoram, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, cilantro, and thyme.

Some other herbs to consider are aloe, borage, calendula, chervil, hyssop, lemon balm, lemon verbena, lemongrass, mint, scented geraniums, and sweet bay.

Whether or not you want to start your herbs from seeds or plants is a matter of preference. I will tell you that growing them from seeds is very rewarding, while using plants is a lot easier. The choice is yours!

All herbs have different growing requirements such as sun exposure and soil fertility levels. Make sure to keep this in mind if you are going to pair herbs together when growing. In order for them to reach their full potential, they will need to have the same requirements.

For growing instructions, you can check the labels on the plants or on the seed packets. You can also refer to my list of herbs for growing instructions on most of the herbs I mentioned above.

Caring For Your Indoor Herb Garden

One of the best things about growing herbs indoors is you get to control the climate, environment, weather, nutrients, and anything else you would have to deal with by growing them outdoors.

Another huge advantage is you really won't have to worry about garden insects and plant diseases harming your herbs.

The three biggest things to be concerned with while growing indoor herbs is ensuring they receive enough sunlight, watering, and fertilizing properly.

Most herbs need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day to reach their full potential. You have several options when it comes to how they receive it.

Sunlight: Hopefully you have a sunny south-southwest facing window or other area in your house. If so, just place your herbs there and they should get all the sunlight they need.

Another option would be to use indoor garden lighting. Indoor garden lights come in many shapes and sizes, but I can't imagine you needing anything more than a few clip-on lamps. That is unless you decide to dedicate a room in your house for your plants like my friend did. In this case you will need something more.

If either of these options are not possible, you can always transport your herbs outside everyday. While this will work, it can become a real hassle. By doing this you will also be inviting pests and diseases to hitch a ride back inside on your plants.

I would only choose this option if it is absolutely necessary!

Watering: Making sure your herbs receive enough water is just as important as ensuring they receive the correct amount of sunlight. However, this step is much easier.

Again, different herbs require different watering requirements, so just check the plant labels and seed packets for the correct watering requirements.

Even indoor herbs can become dry! If you notice the soils surface begin drying out, you need to give them some water at room temperature.

Fertilizer: Since your herbs are not able to absorb all the natural nutrients the outside provides, it is very important that you keep your plants well fed.

There are many people who like to use plant food spikes for their fertilizer. This is because they are easy to use and very convenient. They are suppose to feed your plants for several months at a time.

I have not had good success with them and personally prefer a liquid fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro Liquid All Purpose Plant Food.

I just feel that my herbs absorb the liquid better and I've had great success with it.

Growing herbs indoors in your own indoor herb garden is not difficult! All you need is a little imagination to create your perfect indoor garden.
