Santolina Herb
A Very Beautiful Flowering Herb
In herb gardens, santolina (chrysanthemum parthenium) and its fine, lacy foliage adds a softening touch that
lasts through the winter when the plant retains its leaves.
It can also make a stunning display plant on its own or in combination with other herbs.
Try growing it behind some lemon or silver thyme for a little contrast.
The dried leaves are also a staple of pest repelling potpourris.
Because of its fragrance, santolina is also called lavender cotton, however it is from the aster family.
Description
A perennial herb that grows up to 2 feet tall in zones 6 to 8.
Flowers: Clusters of yellow buttonlike flowers bloom in midsummer.
Leaves: The narrow alternate leaves are silvery or grayish green.
Flavor and fragrance: It has a strong, lavender-like fragrance.
How To Grow
When to plant: Plant the seeds indoors eight weeks before your last spring frost date. Wait until all danger of
frost has passed to transplant the seedlings to the garden. You can also sow the seeds directly in the garden
one week before the last spring frost date. Layer the stems in early spring; divide the plants in the spring or
fall; or take the cuttings in spring and early summer.
Where to plant: Prefers full sun.
Soil and fertility: Plant in well-drained soil of low to moderate fertility and with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Allow the top
inch of the soil to dry between waterings.
Plant spacing: Allow 1 to 2 feet between plants.
Pests: Usually pest-free
Diseases: Susceptable to root rot in soggy soils.
Harvesting
When to harvest: Harvest the leafy branches in midsummer. If harvesting for flowers, wait until the blooms begin
to open. Gather the flowers in the morning after the dew has dried. For most successful drying, harvest during dry
weather.
How to harvest: Cut the whole stems 3 to 4 inches above the soils surface. Cut the flowers with long stems for
easier drying and greater versatility in dried arrangements.
Drying: Hang the stems with leaves or flowers to air dry.
Uses
Arrangements and crafts: Use the branches as a base material for herbal wreaths. The dried flowers add wonderful
yellow accents to winter bouquets and potpourris.
Insect repellent: Santolina is one of the most effective insect-repelling herbs. Use it in lotions, potpourris, and
sachets.
