Growing A Window Box Herb Garden Is Easy

A window herb garden is ideal for people with limited space. Window gardening, especially windowsill herb gardens, grow well in window planters.

Window Herb Garden

Kitchen garden windows and garden window boxes are a good choice for planting an herb window garden.

Gardening in the U.S. and around the rest of the world has become very popular, and herb gardening is no exception.

Don't let the weather, or limited yard space prevent you from enjoying and benefiting from fresh herbs from your very own herb garden.

If you live in an apartment building, a window herb garden may be your only option.

I know people who have plenty of yard space, but choose to grow their herbs in a window planter just so they can add a little curb appeal to the outside of their house.

Others simply place a few of their favorite herbs in decorative pots on a windowsill.

Deciding What Herbs To Grow In Your Window Garden

Now that you know a little about the benefits of window gardens, lets talk about which herbs to plant.

Deciding on what herbs to plant in your window herb garden starts with deciding what you intend to use your herbs for. Do you want herbs for fragrance, decoration, or for adding flavor to your favorite recipes?

If you want them for fragrance or decoration, I suggest growing some lavender and chamomile. If you're just needing a few herbs cooking, then I would suggest growing basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary.

Something else to consider is how much time do you want to spend taking care of your garden? Do you want to grow herbs that are relatively low maintenance or are you okay growing ones that require a little more attention?

Herbs like other plants require certain amounts of sunlight. Some herbs require full or partial sun exposure, while others prefer full or partial shade.

After you have decided on which herbs you want to grow, I recommend you check out my favorite list of herbs for more growing instructions.

Outside Or Inside Window Herb Garden

Again, this is a matter of choice and in a lot of ways depends on which herbs you decided to grow.

If you decide to grow an inside window garden, you will not have to deal with the changing weather conditions and will be able to grow your herbs year round.

However, an outside window garden will give you more choice when it comes to herb selection and will also add a little decoration to your homes exterior windowsills.

Another thing to consider is what direction are your windows facing? As I stated before, herbs are like other plants and need sunlight to flourish. Windows facing the south and southwest usually receive more sunlight; this makes them the best place to grow your herbs.

If you grow an indoor window garden, light is not as much of an issue. You can always move your potted herbs to another location in your house, or use an artificial light source.

What You Need To Get Started

If you are going to grow an indoor window herb garden, then you just need a few containers for your herbs. How fancy you want to get really depends on you. A few plastic containers will only cost a few dollars, while decorative container will be a little more.

I personally recommend spending a few more dollars and purchase decorative containers. This way you will be able to add your own personal taste to your garden.

You will also need potting soil, fertilizer, and your herb plants or seeds.

Deciding on a window box for an outdoor window garden can be a little trickier.

The reason is there are so many varieties to choose from and range in price from about $13.00 to over $100.00.

I have a few recommendations for choosing a window box and they include:

  • - Make sure the style matches your style
  • - Obviously it needs to match your home
  • - Make sure it fits your window sill
  • - Choose a material that can withstand the elements
  • - Never sacrifice quality for cost
  • - Research different styles locally, then purchase online (it's usually cheaper online)

Installing window boxes is usually pretty simple and only requires some basic tools such as a hammer, electric drill, screws, and a leveler.

A window garden is an excellent way to grow and enjoy fresh herbs all year long.

Having your own window herb garden will surely inspire new and wonderful creations from your herbs.
